How Copper Functions

Inside our bodies, Copper is responsible for the regular growth and development of human fetuses, infants, and children. As adults, it is necessary for the growth, development, and maintenance of bone, connective tissue, brain, heart, and many other organs.

Copper is involved all around the body. It participates in the formation of red blood cells, the absorption and use of iron, and the synthesis and release of proteins and enzymes. The enzymes produce cellular energy and regulate nerve transmission, blood clotting, and oxygen transport.

In 2008, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved the registration of antimicrobial copper alloys. The permits claim that copper, brass, and bronze can kill harmful, potentially deadly bacteria.

It also stimulates the immune system, helping repair injured tissue, and promoting healing. All that, and it still has time to help neutralize free radicals, an essential function when treating skin health.

Copper On The Skin

The work of biochemist Dr. Loren R. Pickart facilitated the production of copper in skincare products. His graduate work back in the 1970s developed the use of copper peptides.

Before arriving at the present, let’s rewind to the origins of copper on the skin.

Compounds of copper used for healing and beautification set to the times of Queen Nefertiti, who ruled Egypt around 1350 B.C.

Copper’s role in skin care and wound healing cite back to the Ebers Papyrus, the world’s oldest known book, written approximately 1550 B.C. Perhaps these declarations promoted Queen Nefertiti to color her eyes in bold colors such as the green from malachite, a copper oxide.

Other interesting finds include the records of Hippocratic Collection (460 to 380 B.C.), De Medicina (14-37 A.D.), and Pliner’s Historia Naturalis (23-79 A.D.) - which notes the use of copper compounds to treat skin diseases and infections.

Now, back to Dr. Pickart. His finds were of a special molecule, the human copper peptide GHK-Cu (glycyl-l-histidyl-l-lysine: copper (II)). Observations concluded that a child’s skin is composed of about 90% collagen 3 - strong elasticity and flexibility characteristics - while at the age of 60 the percentage reduces to 10% - collagen 3 decreases with age.

Thanks to this, research has formed firm conclusions to create formulas that can repair skin damage - fix the skin barrier, prevent allergens and bacteria from entering - and increase the production of molecules that help hydrate and moisturize the skin - improving its shape and form.

Benefits of copper on the skin

As previously mentioned, the origins of copper on the skin date centuries back. Let’s extend to the generous benefits copper offers and how, when, and where you can get the best product to help enhance the health of your skin. Aging doesn’t have to be scary if you start practicing habits that can improve your overall health!

Copper has demonstrated an improvement in the following aspects.

  1. Decrease the appearance of wrinkles

The production of collagen diminishes with age. Supplying your skin with copper will increase collagen proteins. Over time, collagen may plump your skin, reducing harsh wrinkles.

  1. Tighter & firmer skin

Elastin proteins are also critical factors in the appearance of your skin. Age comes knocking it down, so prepare it for a fight with copper to boost elasticity to create firmer and smoother skin.

  1. Even skin tone

Your side-kick, copper, can repair skin and even out its tone. It has the potential to remove damaged connective tissues while harvesting new ones at the same time on your skin.

If you are self-conscious about sunspots (age spots), acne scars, or other issues that portray an uneven skin tone. Solutions with copper can nourish your skin.

  1. Antioxidant effects

Another magnificent way copper can establish healthier-looking skin is by reducing inflammation. In some cases, the risk of infections can decrease with its use.

The best source of copper is through diet. Copper is available in foods, including meats, seafood, poultry, nuts, seeds, and legumes. It is also available in supplement form.

And what happens when there is copper deficiency?

By this point, we understand that copper is part of the body's function. It ensures your nervous system works accurately, maintains a healthy metabolism, and promotes strong and healthy bones. Not consuming enough of it can lead to some real health problems.

In reality, it is rare to suffer from a deficiency. But! About 25% of Americans and Canadians may not be intaking the recommended copper requirements.

For the sake of prevention, take a look at the signs and symptoms to take the precautions necessary to have good health.

  1. Weakness & Fatigue: If low, copper absorbs less iron, with iron deficiency anemia could peek. Since it cannot carry enough oxygen to its tissues. Cells also use copper to generate adenosine triphosphate (ATP) - the main energy source of the body.
  2. Are you frequently sick?: Copper keeps the immune system on point. So if you’re cutting back on copper, it will reduce the production of neutrophils - blood cells that act as the body’s defenses.
  3. Brittle Bones: Osteoporosis - the condition of weak bones - becomes common as we age and is also associated with copper deficiency. The creation of cross-linking inside your bones ensures their health; copper participates in the process by encouraging the making of osteoblasts - cells that help power up bone tissue.
  4. Learning & Memory Problems: Brain function and development is part of copper’s daily job. Enzymes use copper to supply energy to the brain - aid the brain’s defense system, and relay signals to the body. People with Alzheimer's have up to 70% less copper in their brains.

Again, copper is essential to serve your body functions. Those were four signs of deficiency, but the list does not end there. Learn more about the symptoms of copper deficiency

Three Types of Copper on Skincare

As you may have already deciphered copper comes in many forms. To not extend endlessly, three will be the focal point.

Copper peptides

The discovery of Dr. Pickart was of copper peptides. Peptides are chains of amino acids found all around the body. This duo plays a role in skin improvement. Similar to the benefits mentioned above.

Powder Copper

Add it to face masks or other skincare products. Mix it with water to create a paste you can apply to the face. Occasionally, copper powder serves as a pigment in makeup and skincare products.

Copper cations

A solution that is applied topically to the skin. A solution that can help to heal wounds and increase collagen production.

Are there any side effects of copper on skin? In the case of copper cations, there are few potential side effects. Nothing to be alarmed at, take the precautions necessary to avoid,

  • Skin irritation
  • Allergic reactions
  • Contact dermatitis

Copper peptides often are expensive. Some swear that it works as efficiently as botox. But research is still ongoing. The word “peptide” can sometimes be used as a marketing term, so read the ingredients thoroughly.

Superoxide Dismutase

In our article, "9 Important Zinc Benefits for Skin and Health", there is a mention of superoxide dismutase. It is considered to be the most sturdy natural antioxidant enzyme. Here’s a quick review to understand how these two minerals -zinc & copper - stimulate SOD and can have a profound effect on helping you rejuvenate your skin.

Some findings associated with superoxide dismutase suggest its aid with cancer. But lack of sufficient investigation can't prove the claim.

This enzyme attaches molecules of copper and zinc to break down superoxide radicals - toxic, charged oxygen molecules. As they accumulate, they can damage cells. These are consequences of normal cell processes, like energy-producing reactions, and must break down routinely.

By stimulating SOD, cell damage can be repaired and free radicals can be neutralized. Skincare products incorporate it for its richness in protecting and improving skin damage.
