Dirt, dead cells, and sebum lead to clogged pores. It makes it hard to achieve clear skin, but there are things you can do to improve the vitality of your skin.

Take a breath, and don’t let stress cage your mental health. Read through to find comfort in how to get rid of clogged pores.

What are Clogged Pores?

The natural function of a pore is to bring sebum oil to the skin’s surface and seal in moisture, protecting and hydrating the skin.

Though, sometimes, the jobs get sloppy, allowing sebum, dead skin cells, and other substances to get trapped inside the pore. It creates a clogged pore that appears larger or with a bumpy feel.

What causes clogged pores?

Don’t be quick to blame mom and dad for your skin type. There persist other factors that you may have control over to change and improve the health of your skin.

Comedones is a term used to describe clogged pore, which lead to acne lesions.

Comedogenic products

Did you start your skin journey without much thought? Maybe you even selected the best products based on your intuition. Chances are you picked up a comedogenic product. Similar to the word comedones, comedogenic products refer to those that clog pores.

Sebum production

Although a naturally produced oil that protects the skin, sebum in excess brings more visible facial pores; the cause lies in hormones, genetics, and age. There is hope to regulate sebum production by seeking medication, a proper skincare routine, changing eating habits, avoiding harsh products, or trying natural remedies.

Ethnicity

A recent investigation arrived that people from some ethnic backgrounds showed to have larger pores than others. Reports illustrate that Chinese women have low density and sizes, a vast distinction compared to the other women studied.

Issues caused by clogged pores

Whiteheads: The pore closes with small white pus.

Blackheads: The pore remains open for oil and dead skin cells. A chemical reaction of the pore’s substance with oxygen makes it appear black.

Pimples and pustules: Swelling and inflamed pores due to bacteria, dead skin, and oil trapped in the pore.

Nodules and Cyst: More severe acne forms underneath the skin's surface. It may cause swelling, pain, and irritation. If a nodule contains pus, it is a cyst. If not treated properly, it could lead to acne scars.

How to treat clogged pores

As we dissected clogged pore, now continues the fun part. How on earth can you get rid of clogged pores?

  1. Noncomedogenic products

Mentioned above was the counterpart. As you familiarize yourself with the terms, you will make the best decision for your skin. Starting with buying products that indicate their use will not clog pores. Learn about non comedogenic products

  1. Avoid scratching or picking your face!

The body doesn’t need you to intervene with this process, just to do your part in taking care of it to be able to function. In this case, do not pick at your acne. Practice tolerance to temporary imperfections because your future self will be thankful when it doesn’t have acne scars, dark spots, infections, or more pimples;  the list goes on.

It’s hard, we know. If you are going to go at it, at least use clean utensils similar to Q-tips to avoid spreading bacteria.

  1. Gentle cleansing

After a long day, whether inside your home or out on the move, cleaning your face is necessary.

If you apply makeup, set timers, or explore a dynamic that helps you not to break the habit of cleaning your face before going to bed.

Cleanse and moisturize accordingly to let your skin rest and repair itself.

  1. Exfoliation

What’s the point of exfoliating? It’s to shed off the dead skin cells from the skin’s outermost layer of the skin. There are different ways to go about exfoliating; with products, homemade recipes, or your leftover coffee grounds.

Natural remedies to exfoliate that you might find online are:

  • Baking soda

This easy-access ingredient might help you cleaning clogged pores. But the first disclaimer, this is not a simple solution since baking soda can irritate the skin. Use it under precaution and in small amounts. Loving the results and doing it many times may cause dryness.

Here is the good stuff. Mix baking soda with a bit of water to create a paste you can gently rub your face in a circular motion. Taking it a step further, you can mix water, lemon, and baking soda to create a bubbling cleansing experience - disclaimer that lemon and baking soda are irritants and can cause temporary discomfort.

Use less than a teaspoon of baking soda, half a lemon, and plenty of water to spread this onto your face. You can apply the mixture of water and lemon juice using a cotton ball first. Then, dampen your fingers and pour a bit of baking soda to spread around your face.

Do this gently since the baking soda will react with the lemon, creating a gassy substance. Wash your face with warm to cold water. Tap dry with a paper towel to avoid bacteria from a used towel.

Moisturize your skin after doing this. Otherwise, it will dry it out. Recommendations for exfoliating can be from three times a week to once a week, depending on your skin type, but for baking soda, you should not use it as a routine method. Instead, use this as a once-a-month type of method.

  • Apple cider vinegar

Similar to baking soda, apple cider vinegar can be helpful to a certain extent. It is highly acidic, with no evidence suggesting it can help clear skin or other claims. Yet it has historical use in traditional medicine.

Since there are vast skin types and each body is different, there is no guarantee. Nonetheless, you are an adult free to venture into your skin health.

Dilute apple cider vinegar with water or with rosemary water, pour it on a spray bottle, and spray it on your face, even your hair.

Gently rub your skin, massaging for a bit before removing it with warm to cold water. Proceed to do the same steps as before; pat dry with a paper towel and moisturize.

Do not get carried away with this method either. Keep it as slow as twice per month or less if your skin hates it.

  • Lemon

Squeeze lemon onto a glass and pour some water to drink it. With the half leftover lemon, gently rub your skin with it. It will feel irritating so wash it off with warm to cold water.

Try this every once a week if it doesn’t sting too bad.

  • Coffee grounds

Are you throwing out the coffee grounds after the morning coffee? How about air drying them to re-use them as an exfoliate for the body and hair? The finer powder will be best to not cause damage to the skin - especially on the face. Shedd dead cells of your body and massage your scalp to cleanse your hair before shampoo day.

For a smoother sensation, mix it with coconut oil.

  1. Retinol

Vitamin A is a hit among skincare lovers - with perfect reason. For aging skin, it is the most ingredient since it increases the skin’s elasticity. As mentioned way above, elasticity decrease is a factor that contributes to larger pores are clogged.

If you are buying a product with retinol, consider the concentration. If this is your first time acquiring, then a low concentration will be best. Retinol can cause skin irritation on the first try.

Other treatments

  1. Pore strips: Made with adhesive and available in different shapes and sizes to remove hair, bacteria, oil, dead skin, and anything on the skin’s surface.
  2. Extractions: Maybe you’ve seen videos or professionals using a metal extractor tool that scrapes blackheads by adding pressure around clogged pores.
  3. Microdermabrasion: A procedure to renew the skin. Apart from clogged pores, this treatment can improve uneven tone from dark spots or acne scarring.
  4. Hyaluronic acid treatment: Hyaluronic acid is a substance in your body that helps things move smoothly - among other things. Adding an extra dose of HA in injection could reduce pore size, but it comes with side effects.

Can you prevent clogged pores?

Of course, you can! It will take effort but the results will be gratifying.

Clean & Moisturize

Clean your face daily! There’s no way around this. Plus, a nutrient moisturizer can boost the help of your skin health.

Using non-comedogenic

As we learned the word comedogenic, some products have certain oils that don’t get absorbed by the skin as easily, so as you pick your favorite makeup supplies or load up on more lotion, read the label.

Usually, formulas will use the term non-comedogenic to indicate that they won’t clog your pores. The list doesn’t end here. There are more factors to contemplate, but these will get you moving to healthy, clear skin.
