Within the last few years, essential oil’s popularity has grown more than ever before. Though most commonly found in the practice of aromatherapy, people use essential oils in diffusers, lotions, perfumes, skincare products, and more.
They have a wide range of benefits, such as reducing stress and anxiety, headaches, migraines, insomnia, and inflammation. They also have remarkable antimicrobial and antibacterial properties.
Essential oils are also excellent for your skin. But what exactly are the different types of essential oils? How are they made? And how do they individually benefit our skin?
What Are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are compounds extracted from plants using distillation, cold pressing, and other methods; this is done to capture the plant’s “essence.” Once the aromatic compounds are extracted, they’re mixed with a carrier oil (such as coconut, jojoba, olive, and more) and ready for use.
However, it’s important to remember that the way essential oils are produced is vital: essential oils obtained through chemical processes are not considered legitimate.

Essential Oils for Different Types of Skin
Another of essential oil’s excellent properties is skincare. Some essential oils may help cure skin conditions, keeping your face looking healthy and glowing. Make sure you discuss the interest in using essential oils for skincare with your doctor before making any decisions alone.
This condition can occur during certain times of the year (such as Winter or Fall) or in dry, arid climates. Though often treated using heavy creams and moisturizers, some essential oils might help.
- Lavender: Lavander essential oil is best used for sleeping and insomnia, but it may also help balance the moisture present in your skin. Lavender is also an excellent hydrator and contains anti-inflammatory properties.
- Chamomile: This essential oil contains azulene, a compound responsible for increasing moisture and reducing inflammation. Best avoided if you have an allergy to ragweed, though.
- Almond: Almond Essential Oil has many beneficial properties. Applying it to the face can help reduce puffiness and under-eye circles, improve acne, reduce scarring, and improve complexion and skin tone. Additionally, almond oil helps treat dry skin and other conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.
Oily skin can be a big self-esteem issue. A person with oily skin usually is an indication their sebaceous glands are over-producing natural oils. Humidity, heat, and hormones can make it worse.
- Frankincense: This essential oil is popular for aiding pain, swelling and inflammation. It’s also used healing wounds and reducing gas (flatulence.) In skin care, frankincense essential oils aid oily skin by regulating sebum, slowing the sebaceous glands’ production. Furthermore, frankincense has anti-aging properties.
- Rosemary: One of rosemary’s key ingredients, esters, helps reduce the production of sebum. Rosemary essential oil is also a great anti-inflammatory and analgesic.
Picking the right products can be hard when you have sensitive skin. Highly acidic essential oils such as lemon or lemongrass are not recommended for people with sensitive skin. The essential oils considered safe for all skin types are lavender, frankincense, and sandalwood.
Acne: Remedying acne might be tricky. The key is to remove as much excess sebum and bacteria as possible without drying out the skin. Rosemary and frankincense are reputable for treating acne, and below are other options.
- Tea tree: With its antiseptic properties, tea tree oil helps fight bacteria and inflammation, both main contributors to the development of acne.
- Coconut oil: Coconut oil is great for reducing inflammation, often associated with acne. Aside from this, coconut oil also prevents infections and stops damages caused by free radicals. It also does great at hydrating, nourishing, and protecting our skin.
